Single vineyard from the Macharnudo district of Jerez and barrel fermented giving this fino more body than most, it has a yeasty, savoury nose with lovely fruit and a mineral palate. Excellent with Marcona almonds or charcuterie.
Fino Dos Palmas 2012 release Gonzalez Byass	6.75
Special limited edition bottling, released once a year after selection in Autumn or 'Saca de Otono'. The name 'Palmas' originates from the system used to classify the casks in the Bodega, with only the highest quality casks getting the 'Palmas' marking. The youngest casks gets one marking whereas the oldest and rarest ones gets four markings. The Una, Dos and Tres Palmas Finos started their life in the Tio Pepe solera system before being set aside for the Palmas releases. All the Palmas sherries are bottled unfiltered, unclarified and unstabilised.

Palo Cortado Viejo Calle Poncho Valdespino	7.00
'Calle Ponche' is the name of one of Jerez's oldest streets, where Valdespino had one of their bodegas and the solera for this Palo Cortado Viejo was first created. The solera has been kept alive over the years by steadily refreshing the younger casks from a careful selection of barrels containing exceptional quality Inocente. Impossible to put an exact age of the wine, but estimated to be about twenty-five years and more it is a rare sherry released in limited volumes and an intense, dry Palo Cortado with extraordinary length.
Solera 1842 Oloroso VOS	7.00
This wine is from a solera begun in the mid 19th century. It long age in oak gives it lots of oxidative rancio notes and yet has the balance of sweetness and fruit just right. The sherry has so much acidity and depth of nutty flavour that it tastes just off dry - quite dry enough to serve with a main course, or with cheese, ham or nuts (and definitely not sweet enough to serve with a really sweet dessert).
Pedro Ximenez El Candado Valdespino	4.50
Single vineyard sherry sourced from Jerez' finest growing zone in the Macharnudo district. Following harvest, the grapes are spread on special mats in the sun to cause evaporation and increase sugar levels. This sherry is rich with notes of molasses, treacle and Christmas pudding and a velvety palate. Drink as a dessert wine or poured over vanilla ice cream which is gorgeous

Made from Chardonnay, Pinot noir & Pinot meunier & aged on its lees for a minimum of 12 months, this is an excellent example of how drinkable English sparkling can be. Blackboys Vineyard is located near the small village of the same name. It is believed to mean "black wood" because of the soot deposited in the woods from the charcoal burners prevalent up to the 1800s.

2009 Ridgeview Merret Grosvenor Blanc de Blanc Sussex England	44.50
Ridgeview Estate has 12 ha under vine near the South Downs village of Ditchling. All of their wines are branded with 'Merret' in acknowledgement of Christopher Merret the Englishman who first documented the process of sparkling wine production. The 2009 is made from 100% Chardonnay and has a light golden colour and fine mousse, the nose is citrusy and fresh and the palate has an excellent balance of fruit and acidity.

The estate has 21 ha under vine on the low slopes of the ancient Kentish escarpment of Appledore which is south-facing and only 6 miles form the coast so the growing season's length is extended by the sea's moderating influence. The combination of a warm microclimate and the estate's clay and sandy loam soils contributes to very high quality grapes. The 2008 Blanc de Blanc is made from 100% Chardonnay and is pale gold with a biscuity, citrusy nose and underlying saltiness. The wine has a creamy mousse and is elegant & delicate on the palate.

This is a pure and powerful expression of old vine Chardonnay grapes from the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize and Oger. The nose displays plum and hazelnut with waxy undertones. The mousse is fine and the texture rich with bright and zingy lime, green apple and slate like mineral-driven intensity. This is bold and unabashed Champagne with a lot of complexity made by Christophe Constant.

Made by Owen Elias at this ca 29 acre vineyard, the Balfour Brut Rosé is a beautiful example of an English rosé, with a wonderful colour, a fine persistent bead of bubbles opening up a nose of gentle yeast and blackcurrant leaf. The ensuing palate begins with a creamy mousse and opens into a light fruitiness. The Pinot noir gives fruit, perfume & colour, Chardonnay brings finesse and acidity & Pinot meunier adds a touch of spiciness.

Mid-slope, older vines on the best hillside of Vertus are the source of this exquisite champagne made by Larmandier-Bernier who has developed a fine reputation for producing stylish, elegant Champagnes with a crystalline purity and depths of salty, chalky minerality. The domaine was certified organic back in 1999 but have turned to bio-dynamic viticulture since then. 'Terre de Vertus' is made from 100% Chardonnay from the 2007 vintage, after a seven month elevage sur lies fines, it was bottled in April 2008 and disgorged in December 2010, at which point no dosage was added. Floral and racy, with notable energy, it is a superb expression of Vertus' terroir.

Jérôme Prévost is a protégé of Anselme Selosse and makes brilliant, rich, complex champagnes from a tiny 2.2 hectare vineyard (with 48 year old vines) near Gueux. Viticulture is meticulous and bio-dynamic and his wines are made in a natural style with indigenous yeasts, vinification and elevage in a mix of new to 13 year old barrels with no filtration or dosage.'Les Béguines' is made from 90% Pinot Meunier and the remaining 10% is Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris & Chardonnay. The initial still wine from the 2008 vintage was oak aged in new to 13 year old barrels for ten months, before being bottled and then disgorged 17 months later in December 2010. Rich, vinous, dense, complex and extremely long on the palate.
2005 Champagne Grand Cru AC Extra Brut 'Minéral' Agrapart & Fils Champagne France	75.75
100% Chardonnay from two different parcels, Le Champ Bouton in Avize and Les Bionnes in Cramant where the vines are very close to the chalky subsoil, this wine has a beautiful pale gold colour and is taut and reticent on the nose with a pronounced minerality. On the palate it is slightly salty with a hint of iodine, it is racy and stylish with a poise and fruit reminiscent of grand cru Chablis. It has a 4 g/l dosage. Pascal Agrapart is not interested in being labelled organic or biodynamic (the French now have a separate term for this type of vigneron 'sans papier').

From 15 hectares the southern part of the Lubéron area and made from 35% Grenache Blanc, 20% Vermentino, 10% Clairette, 10% Ugni Blanc, 15% Viognier, 5% Roussanne and 5% Marsanne, with a small proportion aged in wood and all aged 'on the lees' for 9 months. It displays great balance with ripe white peaches, crisp acidity and subtle hints of nuttiness with a long persistent mineral finish. This could well be mistaken for a good white Burgundy, epitomizing the roots of its winemaker, Sylvain Morey from the well known Burgundian family originating from Chassagne Montrachet.The myriad grape varieties really do add complexity and interest.

2010 Macon Verzé 'Le Chemin Blanc' Nicolas Maillet Burgundy France	33.75
Maillet was one of the first in the region to go back to manual work, ploughing, no weed-killers and manual harvesting. He doesn't like oak and his wines are kept a long time in vat on their lees, to give them more richness and texture without the need for oak. This Macon Verzé is produced from 40 year old vines which are planted on a plot selected for its southern, south-western exposure in the little village of Verzé. It is delicate and complex wine and reveals aromas of peach, pear and acacia flowers with a balance between acidity and textural silky roundness.

Though the location is on the edge of sustainable viticulture these microclimates consistently combine hot days, cool nights and long dry autumns: perfect for the creation of fine Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. This Riesling is whole bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts and left on their gross lees in order to develop complexity and mouthfeel. The wine has a nose of stonefruit, citrus blossom and elderflower leading into a rich and full yet overwhelmingly mineral palate. It is a generous wine whilst still tightly focussed.

François' strategy is to allow for the most optimal ripening possible. His white wines, as a result, are rich and concentrated and are often allowed to develop botrytis with most of the wines wood aged for extended periods of time to prepare them for a very long life in bottle. Here cuv&ecute;e 'Contours De Poncins' is affordable, relatively speaking that is for northern Rhône Viognier, from vines located next to De Poncins, just outside the Condrieu appellation. Vinified in barriques, it is rich and flavourful with delicious complex aromas of peaches, apricots, honeysuckle with a lovely natural balanced persisting finish.

Vibrant & young with aroma of wet stones, yellow peaches and citrus. Well structured, light with ripe acidity, ginger and smoke and a spicy component with hints of seductive subtle sweetness.

When 10 years of efforts trying to establish a premier cru hierarchy came to nothing, rather than continue to use the Anjou appellation that had few quality associations, Leroy declassified his sensational wines to Vin de France. There is a finesse and restraint to this wine (from only 0.70 hectares of low-yielding vines) with a mineral flavour imparted by the schist. Fermented completely dry with the malolactics completed and no batonnage, it shows Chenin in its most elegant style.

Biodynamic estate producing a very fine wine with precise and piercing acidity and purity. Cuvée Edmond is Sancerre at its most complex and detailed deriving from old vines of 'La Moussière' vineyard ranging from 40- 87 years of age on the southerly facing slope of the 'Moussière'. Fermentation takes place in small oak casks and aged on its fine lees for 10-14 months. The final result is an aromatic, complex and structured wine with profound minerality and age worthiness. It has a vivid, uplifting character, rich in aromas of verbena, lime and crushed, fresh herbs and possessing a remarkable, unyielding energy.

Un-grafted old Monastrell vines grown in the Hoya de Santa Ana vineyard at an altitude of 2700', which is one of the highest in Jumilla and enables the vines to preserve their acidity. The wine is deep purple in colour the bouquet shows attractive sweet cherry, black raspberry, and blueberry fruit with notes of liquorice and white pepper spice. Although there is plenty of fruit, there are also many other dimensions that give this quite a bit of structure which presents a fantastic value for money wine with much more complexity than you would expect from a wine that can be found at this price.

Ollieux Romanis is a family owned winery in the Boutenac region of Corbières with Alicante Bouchet vines on a sheltered hillside facing south east. This grape variety has virtually disappeared from France today. Its role formerly was as a Teinturier grape, to add colour to the pale and weak vin de table plonk sloshing of the Midi. Here manual harvesting, a meagre yield of 25 hl/ha and one hundred year old vines results in a deep rich wine with mulberry fruit and peppery overtones.

This eight-hectare vineyard, with its free-draining Moutere clay soil, which slopes down to the Waimea estuary, is ideal for growing aromatic wines as the regular sea breezes dry out the canopies and it's quite an early ripening site as well. The Pinot Noir is a delicious, delicate, elegant style of Pinot Noir. It has a supple, silky texture with an abundance of bright, red fruits. The oak is well integrated to support this fruit and aid the long finish.

Cabernet franc from 20 to 40 year old vines with a due south aspect right at the top of a gentle sloping river terrace near Panzoult, where the soil is made up of 'millarge' (a marine sediment). Meticulous viticulture (yields of only 30hl/ha) have given a wine with lush fruit (black/ red), supple and mineral on the palate with fine, well integrated tannins.
2010 Gigondas AC Domaine Raspail-Ay Rhône France	39.00
Dominique Ay destalks 100% and then gives the wine a long cuvaison before ageing for a couple of years in foudres and demi-muids. The wine consists of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre and is an exceptional Gigondas with real depth of smoky black forest fruits, very spicy with a hint of liquorice and promising savoury tannins.
2010 Crozes Hermitage Domaine Les Lises Maxime Graillot Rhône France	40.50
Son of Alain, this latest releases from Maxime's own vineyard 'Les Lises' compare very favourably with those from his father's. It display an intensity and minerality with juiciness, freshness and poise. An extremely attractive Syrah displaying dense strawberry and blackberry fruit, which are underpinned by notes of seductive spice, hedgerow-fruit scents and flavours offset by supple tannins. Very approachable considering this wine will age extremely well.
2009 St. Joseph Pierre Gonon Rhône France	49.25
60-90 year old vines from the granite soils of Saint-Jean-de- Muzols provide a real backbone to this wine. The Gonons destalked 15% in 2007 and trod the grapes down twice a day during the fermentation in open top wooden vats. They have produced a perfect example of northern Rhône Syrah with black fruits, good depth and excellent structure.

Iconic Pinot noir from the most southernly wine growing region in the world. Here, vineyards are nestled into small microclimates totally surrounded by high mountains, many of which are snow- capped all year round. Though the location is on the edge of sustainable viticulture these microclimates consistently combine hot days, cool nights and long dry autumns: perfect for the creation of fine Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. Bannockburn, with its gentle north facing slopes and deep loess soils seems well suited to the production of complex Pinot Noir. Viticulture makes extensive use of handwork and is heavily influenced by organic practice. The wine displays a nose of ripe red fruits and dark florals leading to savoury notes and a touch of earthiness on the palate. The finish is clean and long with a swipe of fine tannins. Really lovely
